The Yellow Wallpaper
PARSONS 2018 EDITORIAL TOPICS
For this redesign of the famous short story The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, we were tasked to stay within a few design restrictions, but to still creatively use the typography to tell a story. The book had to be a standard size and printed in black and white by an outsourced printer. This story is something I read years ago and it stuck with me even to this day. Heralded as an important early work of American Feminist Literature, it was truly ahead of its time when it was published in 1892. I wanted to use the idea of legibility and prison bar structures to illustrate the mindset of our female narrator going through extreme post partum depression, but recieving no care and help despite her pleas.
